Simple Ways To Reverse Insulin Resistance

By Audrey McGuire

Type 2 diabetes, a serious illness, is preceded by prediabetes, and prior to that there will have been some problems with the mechanism whereby glucose is removed from the blood. The body may be making enough of the hormone needed but not be using it effectively, thereby causing more and more of it to be needed. The good news is that it is possible to reverse insulin resistance.

There are lots of different causes of this condition, and it's more common among certain races of people than others, and in the older population. Some hormones and medicines, particularly steroids, can make it more likely. Being overweight, and the sleep disorder, sleep apnoea, which is linked to obesity, are connected, as is smoking cigarettes or pipes. It is important to consult a doctor for advice, but there are several life style changes which can greatly help this condition.

One change people can make, to improve the problem, is taking more exercise. It is only sensible to seek the approval of a doctor before beginning any keep-fit plan. Some people will be fit enough already to take up hobbies such as weight-lifting which will help build muscle. This is important because glucose moves from the blood into the muscle and the more muscle there is, and the more muscles are exercised, the more efficient this process is. Aerobic exercise, which uses the heart and lungs, also is of great benefit. People unused to strenuous activities can start with simple steps, such as aiming for taking a walk five times a week, which will help increase their fitness.

Being very overweight, and especially carrying fat around the middle, is very unhealthy. Lots of belly fat can cause problems besides this condition because it produces hormones. Dieting can therefore help enormously, and the very overweight would benefit from seeing their doctor who may recommend a weight-loss clinic or dietitian.

Everybody knows that smoking is implicated in many illnesses so it is no surprise it is linked to this one too. So this condition is another reason to stop. Again, many doctors are happy to offer advise and suggest products such as nicotine patches which can make the cravings easier to deal with.

It is debatable whether vitamin D levels are linked to this condition, but a deficiency is a possible cause. People with dark skin who live in areas where there is little sun would be wise to consult their doctor about taking vitamin tablets. A general multi-vitamin is useful for most people.

Diet, not only for weight loss, is important. People should try to avoid the sudden rises of blood sugar associated with eating lots of refined, processed foods, because these are harder for the body to deal with. Eating a low carbohydrate diet is sensible, and should also help with weight loss because low carbohydrate foods release energy slowly, which also keeps hunger pangs at bay. Sticking to low fat, in order to help lower cholesterol, helps too.

There are plenty of ways to reverse insulin resistance. These all involve taking care to live a healthy life, which has the benefit of making people feel better as well as avoiding becoming diabetic. Healthy diets and exercise can also help prevent a wide variety of other health conditions.
