How To Become A Rolfing California Practitioner

By Lila Bryant

As with acupuncture, chiropractics, massage and Reiki, a great deal of training is involved when desiring to become a rolfing practitioner. This is especially true when looking to become licensed in rolfing California. The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration is one of the best bets for those wishing to learn this amazing healing art.

As the process works to reshape and transform these thin layers of threads into new patterns, it is more akin to chiropractics than massage. Although where chiropractors use pressure to reshape and restructure the skeleton aspects of different areas of the body, practitioners and others in the field use aggressive pressure to transform these deepest layers of skin tissue.

Both programs are self-study based and offer a three phase approach to learning. The training can generally be completed in twelve to eighteen months. In each program, lessons will focus on structural integration including specific training in kinesiology, physiology and anatomy. Unlike traditional courses in these areas, these lessons focus on the ability to differentiate different body tissue through touch, the principles of tissue integration, recognizing the difference between structural and functional patterns and how to conduct a complete ten series session known as a recipe.

Individuals will learn how to conduct movement sessions which are based on rolfing principles. Lessons in how to practice tissue building and restructuring techniques are one of the most important aspects of the learning process and will be offered throughout different study periods. Whether an individual has previous training or otherwise, it is important that all students complete the professional ethics training associated with the practice.

For individuals interested in becoming trained as practitioners without experience, the Foundations program offers all the building blocks necessary to learn the practice. Whereas, the Accelerated Foundations program is for those who hold certificates in massage, reiki or other healing arts. The Foundations program requires a high school diploma and 60 credits of higher education, whether through an extended education program, or online learning. Whereas, the Accelerated Foundations program requires having worked with a local professional for a few sessions, proof of work in other areas and a write up describing why one wishes to become a practitioner.

Research is mixed on benefits of the practice, many individuals claim the benefits are far more reaching than traditional medicine. As to how the practice works to help heal and transform the body, it is yet to be determined. One theory is that like with other forms of holistic medicine such as acupuncture and chiropractics, the body retains stress in different areas which is released during a session.

Those who work with practitioners for a full recipe often have great things to say about this healing art. As with all practices, individuals always need check with a primary care provider or holistic practitioner to determine which practices may work best for current needs. Most holistic practitioners and traditional medical staff support the practice as an add-on, if not primary medical care for a number of conditions.

Whether massage, deep energy work, Reiki or other healing art, there are a number of individuals who have testified to the benefits of the practice. It is a form of healing that has seen a resurgence in recent years after somewhat of a drop-off between the 1990s and 2000s. Largely because of concern over structural integration, and invalid research by researchers who do not understand the process, the recipe, or the ongoing benefits of the practice.
