Understanding How To Treat Gingivitis

By Lela Perkins

Gingivitis is experienced by 3 out of 4 individuals aged thirty-five or older. It is a gum disease characterized by bad breath, bleeding gums, and red or irritated tissue. Fortunately, in most cases it can be prevented or reversed when it is caught early. Caring for one's teeth properly is one of the best ways to prevent this condition. The following are several ways to treat gingivitis if it develops:

Drinking herbal tea can help to alleviate the symptoms of gingivitis. However, not all tea is the same, and therefore one should choose green, myrrh, or echinacea tea if his or her goal is to soothe inflamed gums. Some individuals also add caraway oil or clove oil to the aforementioned teas for an extra boost of anti-inflammatory properties.

Adding supplements to one's diet may be helpful in controlling the aforementioned condition. Recent research indicates that calcium, bioflavonoids, vitamin C and Coenzyme Q10 may have a positive effect on gum inflammation. Most supplements of this type can be purchased online or at a local grocery store or vitamin shop.

Certain mouthwash solutions have recently been approved by the US FDA for the treatment of gingivitis. However, a dentist or doctor must order such formulas by prescription as they are not available over the counter. Mouthwashes of this kind of work by creating a protective barrier over one's teeth, which stops the buildup of plaque. An individual's dentist can inform him or her whether such formulas are a wise choice, depending on the person's specific symptoms.

An orthodontics may also suggest topical steroids for specific cases of gum disease. Usually, such drugs are not prescribed unless severe inflammation is present. However, moderate cases are also sometimes treated with medications of this type. After using topical steroids, symptoms typically clear up within 30 days. When all other treatments have proven effective, oral steroids may be prescribed as well.

Following an anti-inflammatory diet is sometimes helpful with regard to alleviating the symptoms of the aforementioned disorder. Anti-inflammatory foods include cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower. In addition, blueberries, sweet potatoes, and spices such as garlic and ginger also have anti-inflammatory properties. However, it is always wise to speak to a family doctor before beginning a new diet.

Those who want to prevent diseases of the gums should floss regularly. This is because one's risk of developing the disease increases when plaque is allowed to build up on his or her teeth and gums. Ideally, daily flossing is recommended, but to lower one's risk even further, he or she should floss twice a day.

One of the best ways to prevent the development of gum disease is to schedule regular cleanings and checkups with a qualified dentist who can evaluate the condition of one's gums and teeth. Such individuals know how to treat gingivitis should the latter occur. Those who suspect they may have this disease or any other gum disorder should schedule an appointment with a dentist or other licensed health care practitioner at their earliest convenience.
